this sucks: week one Thursday 26th May 2011 Getting on the wrong train, running through a bog and meeting a small potato with eyes are just some of the ways that I have been spending my time over the last week and a half. Last Monday, Katy Wilson and I started the next phase of development on ‘This Sucks’ our performance project for 3-5 year olds and their families about a Hoover that falls in love. This particular phase of development has three sections; the first lasted ten days and saw us travel to three nurseries in the east end of Glasgow – Barlanark, Carmyle and Sandaig – to perform ‘This Workshop Sucks’, the prequel to ‘This Sucks.’ In ‘This Workshop Sucks’, Katy and myself have turned to science in order to help our good friend Hetty the Hoover, achieve her lifelong dream to become ‘the biggest Hoover in the whole world’. Unfortunately Katy and I have found that we are not very good at making things bigger and need help to realise Hetty’s dream. The second phase, which starts today, sees us return to the rehearsal room where we will work on developing the story and design for ‘This Sucks’ before returning to the same nurseries for a series of previews that we hope will help the show evolve into something very exciting.

imaginate 2011 Thursday 19th May 2011 Had a great week at the Imaginate Festival last week. I watched some great shows and spent time with some brilliant and inspiring people. First Light's tour came to an end at North Edinburgh Arts Centre in front of appreciative audiences. During it's two week tour, the show has been described as: "a magical performance" Edinburgh Guide and "a treat for ears and eyes" Herald A big thank you to all those that worked on the show and also to everyone that came along to watch it! |

news Tuesday 10th May 2011 First Light has just a few performances left. We will be in Glenrothes tomorrow before heading over to Edinburgh, NEAC and the Imaginate Festival I have really enjoyed watching the show with audiences across the central belt over the last couple of weeks. The whole team have worked really hard to make the show a success and I'm delighted with the tour so far. On Saturday and Sunday I was at the Tramway with Katy Wilson performing This Workshop Sucks. We met lots of fellow professors and although we didn't quite manage to make the biggest hoover in the world this time, we did leave with a lot of very good ideas on how to do so. From Monday 16th May, Katy and I will be working on the project with three nurseries in the east end of Glasgow. A weekly account of our progress in these centres will be posted here. |

news Tuesday 26th April 2011 Despite my residency coming to an end I am very happy to say that I will be working with both Starcatchers and Platform loads over the next few months. Heading back into the rehearsal room with First Light this week to get the show ready for the tour which kicks off in Stirling on May 3rd Full details of where the show is going and ticket information can be found by clicking here On Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th May, Katy Wilson and I will be taking This Workshop Sucks to the Tramway. Originally created for the GFT as part of our Starcatchers residencies, This Workshop Sucks is an interactive performance for children aged 3-5 and their adults. I'll write some more about the show here soon, show you some pictures too, promise, but if you just can't wait or would like to come along to the Tramway click here to find out more. What I can tell you now is that The Incredible Swimming Choir will be returning to a pool near (well, possibly quite close, if you're lucky) you this summer. Dates and venues are still to be confirmed but I'll post them as soon they are. In the meantime you can see some pictures of The Incredible Swimming Choir in action here Really pleased to be returning to this project, especially as there will be a bit of time to develop the piece.

performance dates Friday 18th March 2011 First Light is touring... Last year I worked with a small but perfectly formed group of artists and designers to create First Light. Developed at Platform as part of my residency with Starcatchers, First Light is a show created for 0-2 year olds and the adults in their lives. Presented with few words, a lot of movement and live music - the show is my first attempt at engaging the youngest of audiences in live performance. The current production will form part of the programme at the Starcatchers International Symposium being held at the Macrobert Theatre, Stirling on Tuesday March 22nd - I shall also be presenting a reflection on my year long residency at the event. After a bit of time off in April, First Light will return to the Macrobert on Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th May before heading to the Tramway on Friday 6th May, Eastwood Park on Monday 9th May and Rothes Hall on Wednesday 11th May. We will then take up residence in Edinburgh on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th May as part of the Imaginate Festival 2011. For more information and tickets please click here “A beautiful show. A perfect introduction to the magical world of theatre for very young children.” Tony Reekie, Imaginate Festival Director on 'First Light'
